I recently had the honor of bringing some blooms to a very talented photographer, Jen Larsen, who was leading a styled shoot at the ShowIt United conference in Tempe. This lovely lady is an absolute pro when it comes to the details! I am so excited today to share some of her expertise with you when it comes to capturing the details.

I personally am a fan of detail shots. But I understand you may be thinking, why should I even care about the details come wedding day? Jen has presented some very valid points to consider that may just change your perspective!

Details Tell a Story

Detail photos are more than just a pretty picture of flowers, ribbons, envelopes and shoes. They tell a story!

“As wedding photographers, it’s important to capture all the details our couples spend so much time putting together for their wedding day! It’s part of our job to document all the uniquely special details and preserve the memories of their day! My clients always expect me to deliver on capturing great detail shots!”

I think of a couple’s time from engagement to wedding day and all the fun moments they shared leading from one point to another. They are the experiences of deciding on so many wedding choices that make their day all their own. Her earrings, his shoes, her heels, and his tie. All these decisions have an experience behind them that is captured in time with a detail photo.

Capture the Groom’s Details

Jen is also passionate about making sure the groom’s details are featured just as much as the bride’s, and I think she makes a great point! It isn’t just about the pretty bride pieces, but also showcasing those items special to the groom.

“Every time I photograph a wedding, I approach it from a storytelling mindset. From the portraits, and candid moments, to all the details, every piece plays a role in telling the full story of the wedding day. Without the groom details, in my opinion, it feels like a few pages of that story are missing.”

The groom is most often very excited about picking out his details, from shoes to cologne. Make sure his choices are honored too, as there are TWO people in a couple, not just the bride!

Detail Pieces to Include

You have spent precious time thinking out how you want your wedding day to look and feel. Bring that experience you worked hard to create through in the details shots by contributing little pieces you collect along the way. Jen features a great list of ideas on her blog post about bringing your wedding day details to the next level. I love her ideas about ribbons, lovely trays, and vintage wax seals or stamps.

Don’t Forget to Include Flowers!

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention loose florals as well. Ask me for them! I love providing loose florals to couples for photographers to use as their creative juices are flowing come wedding day. Letting photographers stage the details with florals looks amazing, but also contributes to the style and memories of the day. I can offer some extra key flowers from a design so that personal details can be captured together.

Let the details tell part of the story of your wedding day, captured in images to last a lifetime. The beauty from the arrangements will look appealing, but the memories they bring back to you about planning for your celebration will bring a smile to your face!
