Veronica of Dessert First, Gilbert, Arizona

I am so excited to share with you my friend Veronica of Dessert First! Her beautiful and tasty bakes of art you can eat have adorned many wedding receptions and hosted events. Ranging from cakes to French macaroons and other mini desserts, her modern creations often include metallics and geometric shapes. Countless wedding guests have left satisfied in mind and palate after taking in her beautiful work! I am sharing some helpful information I learned from her when it comes to deciding on those sweet treats.

Nowadays there seems to be no limit when it comes to wedding desserts. The way Veronica sees it is she wants to treat guests to a delicious dessert that they can’t make at home. Anyone can make cake, but not everyone can make and enjoy macaroons or fun mini desserts.

The Menu

If you are looking for a traditional cake look, Veronica’s creations will still knock your socks, or heels, off! Large cakes provide a wide, blank canvas for her to explore. They truly are works of art! A fun trick she offers is to have the bottom tiers of a cake be Styrofoam and only the top tier be real cake that a couple can eat and cut into for pictures. Resources can then be devoted to fun mini desserts for guests to eat, while still having a stunning cake presented at the reception.

Veronica’s design menu include cake pops, macaroons, cheesecake, tarts, truffles, cake, chocolate covered deliciousness and so much more! Her favorite to make is the macaroon. While they are exceptionally tedious, they are fun because their texture and appealing taste often amaze people who might not have had them before.

The time Veronica invests into each project is a labor of love. From baking, to cooling, stacking, covering, decoration, delivery, and staging, a full cake could take about 36 hours. A small naked cake takes about four. With those kinds of hours invested into your desserts, you know they are going to be amazing!

Designing

When meeting with brides, Veronica likes to know their favorite elements, colors, and maybe even metallic details. It is also helpful to have an idea of about how many people will be served, and to provide any design idea inspiration images. She’ll use these design ideas to make a few sketches for couples to give feedback on. Ideally, two months prior is best to have your designs finalized so that Veronica can source supplies for your day’s bakes.

Veronica strives to discover with a couple what is the best fit for their celebration when design dreaming together. For example, contacting her about cake possibilities may lead to a final design with a few different dessert options and a small cake to cut. Or if you are looking to feed a large crowd, after talking with Veronica you may decide a large cake to feed everyone would be the best fit. She will ask questions of couples to get the big picture and the dessert right for the occasion!

Pricing

Dessert options, just like flowers, are custom to each couple. First understanding the design a couple is looking for and their needs will provide for the most accurate pricing. My personal view is that I create designs that fit couples the best once I get to know them a little bit better too. Designing with them in mind, has great results! Offering all custom designs, couples can be sure to have one of a kind creations at their wedding with Veronica also. In general, servings per person range from $5 to $12 at Dessert First, all depending on design.

Upcoming Bakes

As a designer, Veronica is working on the texture of the buttercream application on her cakes. She is continuing to develop her decorating skills to tackle new textures. She is already a pro in my book. But Veronica follows bakers with decades of experiences, and she’s excited to be considered a seasoned baker as well one day. I can’t wait to see what she makes next!
